Unlocking the Art of Asymmetrical Balance in Interior Design

However, if you’re working on more creative objects, consider using some more dynamic options. Aesthetically pleasing visual balance in designs also helps establish a solid emotional connection with viewers, effectively communicating the client’s brand message. As designers, honing this skill is crucial for delivering robust designs that fulfill clients’ marketing objectives while boosting their brands in a competitive market. The column in the image is slightly off center, and it anchors the composition with a strong vertical line — it’s an object we know weighs a lot. The railing on the left provides a strong connection with the left edge of the screen.

The importance of balance in design πŸ–Œ️

You might expect mosaic balance to be the least used online, especially after I offered Jackson Pollack paintings as an example of mosaic balance. The Shiny Demos heading in the upper left and the Opera logo in the lower right counterbalance each other and also appear to radiate from the same center as the text links. The smaller circle in the upper right adds a little translation symmetry and some asymmetry, increasing visual interest in the composition. The text below the grid seems to hang from it, and it’s light enough on its own not to throw the composition out of balance. I have a few more websites than usual for this last article in the series, and I’ve grouped them according to the four types of balance.

These different balancing acts shape how we perceive and experience interior spaces. Asymmetrical design today has found its niche as a creative and flexible approach that resonates with modern sensibilities. Its beauty lies in its ability to infuse energy and originality into a room, making it feel fresh and vibrant. Asymmetrical designs give you freedom of flexibility, unpredictability, and storytelling. Though such designs look more haphazard and chaotic, it shouldn’t be assumed to be easy to make. Creating a balance in such a chaotic design process can be more challenging.

Of course, that effort will turn up in the overall look, creating a strained impression in the user’s eye. Translational Symmetry - Translational symmetry occurs whenever we can move (translate) an element in a design without causing it to lose its symmetric properties. As designers, we are unlikely to use translational symmetry for the whole page.

Architects also use asymmetrical balance to design unique buildings that don’t fit the mold and stand out. Creating asymmetrical balance with construction is trickier than with design because it involves a lot of engineering, so the asymmetrical design doesn’t interfere with the structure. Website design and asymmetrical balance go hand in hand in many ways. Even if the design above the fold is symmetrical, you can be sure that asymmetry starts to show as you scroll. This is because too much symmetry, especially perfect symmetry, gets boring quickly. The illustration example below uses angles, diagonals and color to create asymmetrical balance in the scenes.

How to use Linearity Curve's (formerly Vectornator) Shape Tool to create balance

The person on the left makes the seesaw rotate counterclockwise, and the person on the right makes it rotate clockwise by an equal amount. The force of each person acts in a different direction, and their sum is zero. Let us know if you're a freelance designer (or not) so we can share the most relevant content for you. Apple’s Mac webpage gives us a stunning example of great reflectional symmetry. Imagine a car’s moving wheels and spinning windmills, and you’ve got rotational symmetry. Also known as bilateral symmetry, you’ll find this technique used vertically, horizontally or diagonally.

Understanding Symmetry and Asymmetry in Design

As an independent designer, your next opportunity to unleash your creativity is just around the corner! This is an exciting way of looking at designs that sparks creativity. Use a grid to divide your design into nine equal parts with two equally spaced horizontal and vertical lines.

A formula of a perfect balance

Think of what would happen if a design or photograph was cut into two equal parts. If both parts are different from each other, yet maintain a sense of balance, that means the designer has used asymmetric composition to create visual tension. When looking for examples of asymmetrically designed compositions, Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” is one of the most impressive variants of this design. The bright moon on the top right corner is balanced by the dark cypress trees on the bottom left side of the painting.

You will often find this on log-in pages, search engine home pages, etc. There are a lot of new drawings, and the drawings previously on this websitehave been processed and cleaned up. Some are still rather poor, but these are the best available at this time. Each person has their own personal preferences when it comes to their choice of interior design. A popular theme is a coastal style, which is a style you can use in homes along the coast…. You can adjust the radius of your shape's corners by using the Quick Actions menu anytime you select your shape.

Think of the grid as a scale – for every element you add to one side, something on the other side needs to offset it. To create immediate asymmetry, consider a column grid with an odd number of columns; on one side of the grid create elements that are equal to a column width, on the other double it. It can be tricky to use, which is why some designers stay away from completely asymmetrical projects.

While there are numerous reasons the Taj Mahal is aesthetically-pleasing, one reason is its symmetrical balance, which evokes a sense of traditionalism and stability. In nature, symmetry is present in animals and plants alike, but it’s never 100% perfect. If you were to take a photo of only one half of your face and then reflect it side by side, it wouldn’t look like you anymore.

Various elements, like space, color, lighting, and texture, are artfully arranged to create a sense of balance despite apparent disparities. It allows designers to play with the concepts of positive and negative space and experiment with lighting and color. When web designers use the term ‘dynamic’, what they are referring to is a design in which the viewer’s eye is moved around and through the design.

Biden signs $95 billion aid package with assistance for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan Calls for TikTok ban or sale

Biden during his congratulatory call with Johnson urged him to quickly pass Ukraine aid and began a monthslong, largely behind-the-scenes effort to bring the matter to a vote. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan cautioned that even as new U.S. aid flows into Ukraine, it’s possible that Russia will continue to make tactical gains in the weeks ahead. Still, longer term, it remains uncertain if Ukraine, after months of losses and massive damage to its infrastructure, can make enough progress to sustain American political support before burning through the latest influx of money.

Biden says the US is rushing weaponry to Ukraine as he signs a $95 billion war aid measure into law

Far-right Republicans have adamantly opposed sending more money for Ukraine, with the war appearing to have no end in sight. Biden in August requested more than $20 billion to keep aid flowing into Ukraine, but the money was stripped out of a must-pass spending bill. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg quickly called out Trump for putting “American and European soldiers at increased risk.” But in reality, the White House maneuvering to win additional funding for Ukraine started months earlier. Many European leaders have long been nervous that a second Trump term would mean decreased U.S. support for Ukraine and NATO. The European anxiety was heightened in February when Trump in a campaign speech warned NATO allies that he “would encourage” Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” to countries that don’t meet defense spending goals if he returns to the White House.

Biden immediately approved sending Ukraine $1 billion in military assistance, the first installment from about $61 billion allocated for Ukraine. The package includes air defense capabilities, artillery rounds, armored vehicles and other weapons to shore up Ukrainian forces who have seen morale sink as Russian President Vladimir Putin has racked up win after win. The White House had proposed including in the package provisions it said would have helped stem the tide of migrants and asylum seekers coming to the U.S. Republicans, however, rejected the proposal at the urging of Trump, who did not want to give Biden the win on an issue that’s been an albatross for the Democratic administration. But significant damage has been done to the Biden administration’s effort to help Ukraine repel Russia’s invasion during the funding impasse that dates back to August, when the Democratic president made his first emergency spending request for Ukraine. Even with a burst of new weapons and ammunition, it’s unlikely Ukraine will immediately recover after months of setbacks.

The $61 billion can help triage Ukrainian forces, but Kyiv will need much more for a fight that could last years, military experts say. In public, the administration deployed a strategy of downgrading intelligence that demonstrated Russia’s efforts to tighten its ties with U.S. adversaries China, North Korea and Iran to fortify Moscow’s defense industrial complex and get around U.S. and European sanctions. In a daily meeting convened by White House chief of staff Jeff Zients, the president’s top aides would brainstorm possible ways to better make the case about Ukraine’s dire situation in the absence of aid. In private conversations with Johnson, Biden and White House officials leaned into the stakes for Europe if Ukraine were to fall to Russia. On explicit orders from Biden, White House officials also avoided directly attacking Johnson over the stalled aid. At the time, the House was in chaos because the Republican majority had been unable to select a speaker to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who had been ousted weeks earlier at the urging of restive legislators on the right.

Meanwhile, Ukraine for the first time has begun using long-range ballistic missiles provided secretly by the United States, bombing a Russian military airfield in Crimea last week and Russian forces in another occupied area overnight, American officials confirmed Wednesday. The U.S. is providing more of the Army Tactical Missile System, known as ATACMS, in the new military package, according to one official who was not authorized to comment and spoke on the condition of anonymity. Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has complained that European allies have not done enough for Ukraine. While the former president stopped short of endorsing the funding package, his tone has shifted in recent days, acknowledging that Ukraine’s survival is important to the United States.

The Senate has passed $95 billion in war aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, sending the legislation to President Joe Biden after months of delays and debate over how involved the United States should be in foreign wars. For instance, administration officials at the speaker’s request briefed Reps. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and Ralph Norman, R-S.C., two conservatives who were persistent antagonists of Johnson. At frustrating moments during the negotiations, Biden urged his aides to “just keep talking, keep working,” according to a senior administration official, who insisted on anonymity to discuss internal discussions. By late October, Republicans finally settled on Johnson, a low-profile Louisiana Republican whose thinking on Ukraine was opaque, to serve as the next speaker.

Tucked into the measure is a provision that gives TikTok’s Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, nine months to sell it or face a nationwide prohibition in the United States. The administration and a bipartisan group of lawmakers have called the social media site a growing national security concern, which ByteDance denies. “The fact is that it’s going to take some time for us to dig out of the hole that was created by six months of delay,” he said.

Understanding Symmetry and Asymmetry in Design

asymmetrical design

Designers need to play with the weight of elements until they reach an efficient equilibrium. Focal points are essential in achieving an asymmetrical balance because they guide the viewer’s eye through the space, creating a sense of movement and harmony. They can be anything from a piece of artwork, a window, or a statement piece of furniture. Asymmetrical balance in interior design is a unique and intriguing way to bring harmony to your living space. This type of balance is created by splitting the room into two halves that mirror each other but with subtle differences. It’s something you create.” So, get your creative juices flowing and get started creating the balancing act of your perfectly symmetrical and imperfectly asymmetrical designs.

Asymmetry FAQ

Plus, you’ll find a collection of Visme templates using asymmetrical balance that you can customize right away. Everything reflects around a vertical axis — the navigation bar is centered, the featured images are centered, and the heading is centered. Of course, it’s fairly easy to achieve a balance in symmetrical layout—all you need to do is put the same weight on the right and left parts of a page. We find perfect symmetry when two mirrored sides are exactly the same. Symmetrical design themes make it easy for the brain to process the dΓ©cor idea when someone walks into a room.

It Adds Visual Interest

The placement of elements can determine how successful the design will be. That’s why one of the first things designers do when they start working on a new page is to decide what the arrangement of elements will be on that page. There are two basic approaches to space elements on a page—designers can either lean toward a more symmetrical arrangement of elements, or an asymmetrical one. Only when you’ve answered these questions will you be able to have a better idea of whether a symmetrical design or an asymmetrical design will be the one to work better for that page. Remember, too, that your user’s eye will work in concert with your choice, so make sure that you consider all your elements and aspects of your design with care. However, when complexity increases, you will often find that you can manage asymmetry more easily.

How to use Linearity Curve's (formerly Vectornator) Shape Tool to create balance

The ceiling paintings of many churches also use rotational symmetry. In fact, they are almost like mirror reflections of each other. And in doing so, they give the viewer a sense of structure and formality. Hopefully, this article gave you some insight into two frequently used instances in the world of artists- asymmetry and symmetry. It makes us curious, and it’s an efficient way to draw the spectator’s attention to the key element of your design. If we walk over a sandy beach, a soft patch of ground or a snowy area, we leave our footprints behind us.

asymmetrical design

Now, let’s take a look at another famous piece of artwork -- The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. This painting, unlike the Taj Mahal, is asymmetrical in nature -- and yet, it’s still balanced and strategic in design. To better understand asymmetrical balance, you have to see it in action.

There must be at least one line of symmetry for achieving symmetry, a place where the objects reflect, rotate, or translate. That’s why symmetrical balance is more challenging to accomplish than asymmetrical balance. The center mechanism of the seesaw is a point of balance for the asymmetry; the long neck of the giraffe and its scarf balance out with the overflowing rump of the hippopotamus.

Translational symmetry

The zigzag line with specific data points goes from left to right and is easy to edit without disrupting the overall balance. This design is easy to continue if you have more content to add. Asymmetry also has impact and works especially well as a concept that is used with symmetry in the scope of a complete project. Experiment with asymmetry and fall in love with this dynamic design technique. Consider each element on the grid as you would with any other project.

And as we already know, footprints are usually symmetrical to one another, yet, the footprints may slightly differ. Pure symmetry is very rare in nature, for in the majority of cases variations can be found. Again, I hope you’ve enjoyed this series, and I hope even more that something in the series has given you more control over the visual communication in your designs. There was certainly a random and chaotic feel with the letters strewn about, but the balance in the composition works.

Types of Symmetry

The direction in which the physical weight acts is replaced by visual direction. Glide reflectional symmetry is a play on reflectional symmetry, but it involves a shift in the position of each mirror image. Like rotational symmetry, it also conveys a sense of moving forward. More visually interesting than its symmetrical counterpart, this visual technique has a large focal point on one side with several, less significant focal points on the other.

Instead, we may occasionally use the principle for individual symmetric elements on the page. It’s only important to get close to the effect; exactitude is not necessary. Now we’re going to look at two powerful design principles that may, at first glance, seem too simple and second nature to us to warrant too much thought. However, we would be wise not to underestimate their capabilities and the benefits of their effects.

When we think about our environment, most natural objects and creations around us are not absolutely symmetrical. For example, we are used to thinking of our face and body as two mirroring parts. However, the left side of the face is not absolutely identical to the right side. Designers often use reflection symmetry to give equal weight to either side, or to create an interesting visual effect.

Place your pencil or finger where you want the line to begin, and then drag to where you want the line to end. Hold a second finger on the canvas to snap your line horizontally, vertically, or in 45° intervals. To change one single corner point of your shape, select it using the Node Tool and then slide your finger along the corner radius slider to adjust it. To change the radius of your shape's corners, simply drag your finger or pencil on the corner radius inside the style tab.

That’s why symmetry is so powerful—symmetrical design is a design that has order and stability, and is therefore easy on the eyes. Symmetry is best when you are seeking a more serious aesthetic, want to enhance recognition and recall, and want to achieve more order and structure. Use asymmetry ready to spend extra time arranging elements to find unique ways of achieving balance or are seeking a more playful layout to convey user interest. Incorporating pet-friendly rugs in your living space can also contribute to an asymmetrical balance.

Ultimate Guide: What To Wear On A Cruise

dinner attire for cruise

Packing for your Caribbean cruise will include bright colors, tropical patterns and plenty of swimsuits. You’ll be sailing in warm climates and spending your day in the sun or at the beach, so you can plan to wear most of your summer and spring clothes. Men should pack a variety of polos and t-shirts for casual nights on a European cruise, along with either dark or light jeans. Similar to women, we've picked hues of blue and white to perfectly align with your Mediterranean cruise.

What to Wear on Caribbean Shore Excursions

You should make sure you have a wide array of clothing packed away in your suitcase, as cruises may require everything from a casual swimsuit to a formal tuxedo. Princess Cruises is smart casual, so pack clothing that adheres to that guideline. In addition, bringing along a rain jacket, an umbrella and galoshes may be a good idea if rainy weather interrupts any scheduled shore excursions. Folding clothes can create creases, and cruise cabins are not equipped with irons (although they can be found in the ship's laundry rooms).

Formal Cruise Dinner Dresses: Essential Tips for Choosing the Perfect Fit

Finally, pajamas, a jacket or sweater, athleisure wear, a hat, sunglasses, sandals, athletic shoes, and dress shoes round out a perfect cruise outfit packing list. T\nhough it's tempting to pack everything, cruise outfits are meant to be laid-back, so plan to wear a few items of clothing more than once — no one will judge you, promise. For those evenings when the dress code is relaxed yet chic, passengers seek attire that balances comfort and fashion. These versatile outfits resonate with the laid-back luxury of a cruise and ensure a memorable dinner under the stars or a serene walk along the promenade deck. For the women, think of the breezy women’s cruise wear, such as flowy dresses and lightweight tops perfect for strolling the ship or a local market. Men can opt for casual cruise wear for men, including relaxed button-up shirts and breathable shorts, making transitions from onboard leisure to shore excursions seamless.

Formal or Semi-Formal Dress Code

For my husband, he prefers to wear his sports coat or casual blazer rather than a tuxedo or suit. For many, a cruise vacation is all about spending as much time as possible in or near the sea. Maybe this means claiming a lounge chair as your own, seeking a spot in the sand without footprints or swimming out into the clear blue water.

If you're cruising in Alaska or run into a rainstorm in the Caribbean or Europe, you'll probably spend most of your day inside. Keep a rain jacket or fleece handy in case you want to soak up the scenery from outside. We’ve gone over what to wear on a cruise during the day, evening and on formal nights.

You'll likely want to bring a lightweight sweater or cardigan for the evening time and the onboard air conditioning. Resort casual dining is another option for those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere while still maintaining a touch of style. Resort casual attire is similar to smart casual, but with a more vacation-oriented vibe. This dress code is ideal for those hot summer evenings when you want to feel comfortable and effortlessly chic. In the evening, the casual dress code still applies, but with a slightly more refined touch. You can opt for a dress or a skirt paired with a blouse for women, and slacks or khakis with a collared shirt for men.

Norwegian Cruise Line dress code

In the evenings, T-shirts and shorts are not permitted in the ships' public areas. Jeans are allowed on casual resort wear nights, as long as they aren't torn or ripped. Dress-up nights are found on three- and four-night Disney cruises, with optional formal and semiformal nights on seven-night cruises. Dress-up means dress shirts, slacks and jackets for men and dresses or pantsuits for women.

Sturdy, comfortable hiking or athletic shoes are obviously needed for hiking excursions, such as the Scenic Coastal Hike in St. Maarten or the Hop-on, Hop-off trolley tour in Key West. Also know that closed-toe shoes are mandatory for zip-lining and most horseback riding, ATV and bike tours. Take your time and put some thought into packing for a Carnival Cruise and you’ll be ready to dress perfectly for every cruise occasion. Remember, there’s only so much room in your suitcase and stateroom, yet you’ll need enough clothing to take you from arrival to departure and every excursion in between.

Clothes You Shouldn’t Pack for Your Cruise

In general, even on a casual dinner cruise, it's best to cover feet, torso and legs both for your and other passengers' comfort. Shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, sundresses are all appropriate day wear for sea days. If you’re by the pool, it’s important to know that bathing suits are not permitted in the buffet or inside the cruise ship, so make sure to pack a cover up. Norwegian Freestyle Cruising allows you to dress more casually than you might be able to with other cruise lines. That means you can be more casual in the buffet and regular specialty restaurants. You could have scorching hot temperatures during the day, but it's chilly at night on board as your ship is cruising between islands.

It’s a fine line between Smart Casual compared to just Casual night, especially on a sun-filled Caribbean cruise. In all honesty, the formal evenings onboard have become more and more casual over the years. Layering is essential to adjusting to changing temperatures throughout the day.

If you want to have fun with formal night, pack your favorite cocktail dress, dapper hat or fascinator, playful ties, jewels and cuff links. Cruisers also can rock formal military uniforms or the custom formal attire of other countries -- such as the Barong Tagalog (pictured) or a dress kilt from Scotland. What you wear ashore depends on the time of year, climate, landscape, intended activity and cultural customs. Following are a few cruise-inspired dress codes to follow when going ashore.

Accessorize with statement jewelry and a clutch bag to complete your ensemble. Don’t forget to wear high heels that are comfortable enough for dancing the night away. While of course you’re welcome to stay in your swimsuit almost all day long on a cruise, there are certain occasions when Celebrity Cruises dress code requests otherwise.

Examples include the White Party, Gatsby Night or the '60s and '70s-themed Flower Glory Party. On sailings of 16 nights or longer, formal and semi-formal are optional on two evenings. Some cruise lines (think Cunard or Crystal) are more formal than others -- and across all lines interpretations of "formal" can vary.

Semiformal entails suits or jackets for men and dresses or pantsuits for women; optional formal attire is not specified but is generally a more elegant version of semiformal wear. Most cruises also include one or more theme nights (like Pirate Night). On these evenings, passengers can either wear elegant casual attire or opt for a more formal look, such as gowns, cocktail dresses, dark suits or tuxedos. Oceania's dress code is simple and casual, which may come as a welcome surprise to those who know the line as a luxury option. Country club and resort-style attire are generally appropriate, like button-down shirts and slacks for men or dresses, nice pants or skirts and tops for women. In all evening dining venues, passengers are requested to adhere to a more elegant interpretation of country club casual dress code.

What Should I Wear on a Cruise? A Guide to Cruise Line Dress Codes

dinner attire for cruise

Resort casual is the realm of boat shoes and leather sandals and is often a gray area for would-be cruisers. For women, however, capris, sundresses and knee-length skirts are always acceptable, while men can't go wrong with khakis, golf shirts and button-ups. Take along a cardigan or an attractive pullover for cool sea breezes. Some lines specify clothing, while others offer only guidelines, leaving sartorial decisions to your best judgement. In general, however, it is best to err on the side of formality, eschewing jeans and flip-flops for something a little nicer.

Packing For Your Vacation Plans

While the name might be “formal” or “elegant” night, you won’t be out of place as long as you dress nicer than a t-shirt and shorts. Remember, the cruise lines want you to enjoy yourself and not be worried about if you should be in a tuxedo. We’ve taken dozens of cruise and know that for those unfamiliar with formal night, it can feel a bit unnerving trying to figure out the ins and outs of dressing up. At the same time, some people don’t want to dress up at all and prefer to know what other options they have. For women, you can look at wearing long sleeve dresses; even a sweater dress would be perfect for Alaska.

How to Pack your Cruise Outfits

Make sure you’re dressed when shopping onboard, playing in the casino, or having lunch at the buffet. Perhaps when you learned there would be formal nights onboard, you had nightmarish flashbacks to ill-fitting prom tuxes and figure skater-style sequin dresses. What to wear on your Caribbean shore excursions will depend on what activities and adventures you have planned. Consider packing a lightweight waterproof jacket for your days off the ship. So if you are just hanging out around the ship — having a drink in a bar, playing in the casino, watching an evening show — then you are perfectly fine dressing down. While many people participate in formal night, a considerable chunk of passengers don’t.

Does Everyone on the Ship Dress Up?

Dressier nights on a cruise, known as formal or gala evenings, allow one to dress up and celebrate. Cocktail dresses, evening gowns, tuxedos, or suits are appropriate for these occasions. It’s a chance to showcase more elegant and sophisticated attire while enjoying a special evening onboard. Dressing up on a cruise is not mandatory, but it can enhance the overall experience and add to the festive atmosphere onboard.

Tank tops for men, flip-flops, baseball caps and visors are not permitted in the main dining room or any of the specialty restaurants. When the hot sun is shining, shorts, T-shirts, bathing suit cover-ups, sleeveless or tank tops and casual sun dresses or maxi dresses are ideal options for cruisewear. By the pool or on any of the outside decks, expect to see just about everyone in a swimsuit. (In Europe, expect to see your fair share of Speedos!) If your ship offers recreational activities such as a rock-climbing wall or basketball court, remember to pack socks and sneakers.

PLAN FOR FUN

The dress code for formal nights on a Princess Cruise is tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits for men and evening gowns, cocktail dresses or elegant pantsuits for women. Smart-casual attire includes pants and open-neck shirts for men and skirts or dresses, slacks and sweaters for women. During formal nights, women often opt for cocktail dresses, elegant evening gowns, or dressy pantsuits. Men typically wear tuxedos, suits, or dress shirts paired with slacks and a tie.

Comfortable Shoes

dinner attire for cruise

These materials allow air to circulate, preventing you from feeling overheated. Since flip flops are not allowed in the evening, make sure to bring comfortable shoes or sandals to wear during dinner in the main room. If you’re planning on doing a lot of walking around the ship during days at sea, it’s a good idea to pack a pair of sneakers or other comfortable walking shoes. Sneakers will also be useful if you try out a fitness class or use the gym equipment in the ship’s state-of-the-art fitness center. This is an easy clothing item you can drape over your shoulders to dress up an outfit, or to warm you up if you’re outside and there is a chill in the air.

Teenagers can dress casually on a cruise most of the time, but should follow dress codes in the main dining room. Oceania and Azamara are elegant, but not formal, however Silversea does have formal nights. There are a couple of exceptions out of the mainstream cruise lines, that fall on either end of the cruise dress code spectrum. If you’re going on a tour or sightseeing shore excursion, there will likely be a lot of walking involved. Dress comfortably for the weather and make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Step into Summer: Affordable and Fabulous Sundresses for Women

This can include nice slacks, a blouse for women, khakis, and a polo shirt for men. Packing light is an essential skill when it comes to traveling, and a dinner cruise is no exception. By packing strategically and focusing on mix-and-match pieces, you can create multiple outfit options with a limited number of items.

If you are visiting any jungle environments, watch out for mosquitos. Wearing long pants or skirts can help you avoid some uncomfortable itching later. Overly faded jeans or ones with tears and holes are also not permitted in the dining rooms. If you prefer to stay very casual throughout your evening meals, you'll need to stick to the buffet and outdoor casual dining spots. If so, kids who are 12 and younger can wear nice shorts to any of Norwegian's onboard restaurants. In the worst case, even if you don’t see any notice at all, you will definitely not miss the fact that many people are dressed up when you head to dinner that evening.

If you decide that shorts and a t-shirt are as formal as you want to get, you won’t be alone. Alaska is also the perfect destination for a jumpsuit with pants or pantsuit to keep warm. Most Alaska sailings will be 7-nights long, so you can expect to have two Formal Nights during your Royal Caribbean cruise. Keeping with our theme of packing for cool weather, we’ve selected a few outfits that would be perfect for Formal Night on your cruise.

Men should consider wearing a suit and tie on Formal Night, according to Royal Caribbean’s guide. A long-sleeve collared shirt with a tie, paired with nice dress pants, can also work well on Formal Night. Again, in my experience, Europeans dress more polished and on-trend than anywhere else I’ve cruised.

So, embrace the casual nature of your cruise vacation and enjoy the freedom to dress comfortably while you explore and unwind during the day. The duration of your dinner cruise plays a significant role in determining how much clothing to pack. It’s crucial to consider the length of your trip to ensure you have enough outfits without overpacking unnecessary items.

Carnival Celebration’s Deck Plan Includes Unique Spaces, But Is Confusing to Navigate

The Carnival Breeze seems to sum up everything that’s great about cruising with Carnival, and yet at the same time highlights some of the major drawbacks of the cruise line too. In fact on average scores, the worst ship on the list scored a 3.2 out of 5 – that’s still pretty good. Then for any tie-break scores, I’ve then looked at other factors which either make the ship more appealing or more unique – anything which can settle which one is better. In Cozumel, we did Tabasco’s Chef Maestro, Cooking & Tasting excursion booked through Carnival Cruise Line. During our cruise, we enjoyed a Sea Day Brunch, and I ordered the House Special Skillet Cake.

Unsanitary, horrible food, smells of sewage on ship

In fact, Carnival is so dedicated to keeping the ship in the Lone Star State that it had a Texas star painted on the ship's hull. The ship shares Carnival's "zone" concept with its two older sisters, meaning it has dedicated areas for dining, drinking, entertainment and outdoor fun, including Bolt, a top-deck roller coaster. Dining might feel more like fast food than you’d find on other cruise lines, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t delicious. In fact, I think other cruise lines can take note of Carnival’s approach to dining with fantastic eateries serving quick, poolside grub. This keeps the atmosphere feeling very casual, which aligns perfectly with Carnival’s branding.

However, it was disappointing to see that many menus weren't marked with specific options for vegetarians, vegans and people who can't eat gluten. Dislikes for me include a shower door that opens toward you instead of into the shower, making the already tiny bathroom even tighter. I also didn't like the "SNOOZIN'" door hangers, which often got caught in my door when I closed it; I would've rathered a "do not disturb" button like many other new ships have. On the wall above Dr. Inks, window-shaped screens provide a show for anyone passing through the length of the Currents promenade area. Programming rotates between underwater adventures, nature scenes and even artwork produced by passengers and kids from St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

I’ve seen people wear anything and everything in the evenings onboard Carnival’s ships, so don’t stress too much about the dress codes. Sea days in warm climates mean that most guests will be dressed as if they are hitting the pool or beach. Shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, dresses, and swimsuits are common during sea days. Like all cruise lines, Carnival has a strict smoking policy to ensure the safety of all passengers. Fire is the biggest threat to cruise ships, so these rules are enforced. Those wanting to stay active can enjoy the walking path around Carnival’s top deck, although I’ve found these to always be busy with kids and families walking to the onboard thrills.

The menu has several types of meat — including steak, of course, as well as lamb chops and chicken — and seafood items like fish and lobster tail. I went with a 9-ounce filet mignon, which was cooked to perfection. It came alongside several sauces and sides of broccoli and crinkle-cut fries for $49 ($15 for kids). Another excellent dinner during my voyage occurred at Rudi's Seagrill (Deck 8), an upscale seafood restaurant named for chef and pop artist Rudi Sodamin. The lobster macaroni and cheese was the perfect indulgence to start my meal, and I followed it up with a delicious crab cake.

These vessels are designed structurally to visit smaller ports, yet still offer plenty of versatile amenities. When looking at the biggest cruise ships in the world, only the Excel Class makes the top 50 list. These massive vessels clock in around 180,000 tons - notably bigger than any other ship class in its fleet. While Carnival is vastly popular in the cruising industry, you won’t find the same massive cruise ships as rivals Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Carnival Celebration launched a little late in 2022 to be ranked in last year’s list, but for 2023 she has snuck into the top 10. Sister ship to Mardi Gras, she is one of the flagships of the fleet, and is absolutely packed with amazing features, which many guests love. Carnival Glory is another ship that has been a stalwart for Carnival for a long time, and as a result, it’s showing its age – reviews do comment on some parts of the ship looking a little worn. She’s one of the best Carnival ships if you want to relax on board. So remember, this is still subjective but it’s based on cruise passenger experiences, and all of the ships are at least “good”. Most of them are complimentary and exceptionally good from fan favorites like Guy’s Burger Joint and new options like Big Chicken and Street Eats.

Celebrity Cruises

I have sailed numerous times aboard many classes of Carnival Cruise ships, so I was excited to have the opportunity to experience this incredible ship firsthand. While better than the main dining room, both restaurants had rather simple menus and lackluster food preparation, especially when compared to other cruise lines. While the meals here were better than the main dining room, neither of them were at the caliber of a specialty restaurant on other cruise lines. Combine that with short, affordable voyages from Miami, and you can sail to the Bahamas or Caribbean for four or five nights from as little as $104 per night if you're solo. Short sailings also tend to draw a more fun-loving, social crowd. So, if your goal is to mingle and potentially meet other solo cruisers, you stand a good chance on Carnival Sunrise.

We had never eaten here before on any of the other Carnival ships, so we wanted to try some things. The stateroom features USB ports on both sides of the bed and LED reading lamps. Overall, we enjoyed this stateroom during our cruise, and I am always impressed by the many details Carnival integrates into its stateroom design.

It had about 10 channels of news, movies and children's programming, and several Carnival-sponsored channels. My room had two twin beds pushed together into a queen-size bed that was flanked by bedside lamps and two one-drawer, one-shelf nightstands. The living area had a long sofa that could transform into a bed or the bottom half of bunk beds. In place of a traditional shorter coffee table, there was a taller wooden table that could double as a makeshift working desk. Carnival Sunshine offers a nice variety of cuisine, so all palates will be satisfied. You could enjoy a spicy chickpea curry dish or jambalaya, freshly prepared artisan deli sandwiches and wraps, or load up on salad fixings and fresh fruit.

If you pre-purchase the drink package before your sailing, you will save 10% versus waiting to purchase onboard. Instead of the onboard price of $65.95 per day, you will pay $59.95 per person per day. If you plan to drink frequently on your Carnival cruise, you might want to consider booking Carnival’s CHEERS!

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences.

The TV also allows you to watch select live channels and shipboard programming and to check your onboard bill. It was completely different — different color, different taste and different presentation — from what I received when I ordered the same drink on a sailing two months prior. However, the old ingredients were listed on the menu, meaning passengers weren't getting what they thought they ordered. One afternoon later in the sailing, two different crew members approached me a total of six times in less than half an hour while I was having lunch on the Lido deck. The first five times, I simply said, "No, thanks." After the sixth time, I had enough and told them nicely but firmly to stop asking me. I found the high-pressure sales tactics excessive and irritating when all I wanted to do was eat my meal in peace.

Carnival Cruise Reviews 2024 UPDATED: Ratings of Carnival Cruise Line

While cigarette smoking is allowed in the casino, according to Carnival's website, you must be seated and playing to smoke in the casino. Smoking is permitted in designated areas on Deck 3 (port side, forward) and Deck 10 (starboard side, midship). On Carnival Sunshine, smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is only allowed in designated outdoor areas and in the casino. We sailed through a storm for a couple of days, and both the "Welcome Aboard Show" and the Playlist Productions "Epic Rock" show were altered because of it. Instead of a full-on production, we got two short sets from each comedian (for the welcome show) and performers singing from stools on stage ("Epic Rock"). The fitness center was well stocked with just about every piece of equipment you need to keep your workout routine while you cruise.

This beautiful terminal is now enlarged and designed to fit the larger Excel class ships like Carnival Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. Did you enjoy our Carnival Celebration cruise ship scorecard review? Do you have plans to sail on this new Carnival Cruise Line ship? Drop us an anchor below with your latest Carnival cruise reviews. Another bright spot of this Carnival Celebration cruise ship review was the crew and the fantastic service we received throughout the entire week. From the sports deck activities, to Family Feud and Deal or No Deal, to the comedy shows, there was never a dull moment during our sailing.

Carnival Celebration

Carnival’s reputation for ships that have a fun party atmosphere is definitely well-earned. The slightly more negative reputation for ships being too crowded or too loud is maybe justified on some ships, but guests mostly have a really positive time during their cruise. Most Carnival ships are aimed at families and have a lot of kid-friendly activities. Older ships tend to be quieter – Carnival Conquest is a popular ship for couples who want to relax. Couples who want to party will enjoy Carnival Sunrise or Carnival Radiance more. Carnival is not a cruise line known for luxury, with ships more aimed at family fun and more of a party atmosphere.

Carnival Miracle Deck Plan Never Feels Cramped

Perhaps the most difficult aspect of Carnival Celebration relates to the onboard service from its 1,735 international crewmembers. These formerly complimentary venues – a combination of Mexican and Asian and the Italian-themed Cucina – are now free for the first visit, and $8 per person for all repeat reservations. Carnival’s accessible price-point and high-quality entertainment also works in favor of multigenerational travel. It’s a cruise that almost everyone can afford, and cruising aboard Carnival Celebration with family and friends is a treat indeed. For some, it may very well be their first introduction to the world of cruise travel.

Drinking age

In Costa Maya, we chose to stay aboard the ship and enjoy everything it had to offer. Leading up to this port day, we hadn’t booked any excursions, so it was nice to have the ship tour ourselves while many of the ship’s guests were off the ship enjoying this port. If you haven’t done this before, you might be surprised how different the ship can be during these times. Suddenly, there are very few or no lines, and the whole ship has a different vibe. We chose to take it easy, have a slice of pizza al fresco, look at the many ships in port with us today, and relax. With so many options and different venues, this was not necessary for other activities though.

My two most disappointing extra-fee food encounters on Carnival Jubilee were Seafood Shack (Deck 16, in the Lido zone, near the pool) and room service. Shaq's Big Chicken, a restaurant backed by basketball great Shaquille O'Neal (who is also Carnival's CFO, chief fun officer), is perfect if you have a hankering for some fried chicken. In addition to chicken strips, sandwiches and fries, the counter-service venue also serves breakfast. Do yourself a favor and try the chicken and biscuit combo with fries.

You might think these are just for kids, but even I found the slides to get my adrenaline pumping. Carnival’s production shows are not as long and over-the-top as you’ll find on competitor cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line. Most shows are only 30 minutes long, which allows you to bop around to multiple events, activities, and shows throughout your day. Those looking for a more upscale dining experience can try out Carnival’s signature steakhouse, Fahrenheit 555. Although this was not our favorite place to dine on Carnival, many seem to rave about the steakhouse.

You can also complete your online check-in as your sailing gets closer. Gratuities are charged each day onboard Carnival’s cruises for every person in your cabin. These can be prepaid before boarding your cruise or can be charged daily during your sailing. The current rate (as of November 2023) is $16 USD per person per day in standard rooms while suite guests will be charged $18 per person.

Like all major cruise lines, Carnival Cruise Line rewards loyal cruisers to the brand through its VIFP Club. VIFP stands for Very Important Fun Person Club, which perfectly aligns with Carnival’s Fun Ship branding. If you’re looking to enjoy adult-only time - whether late onboard or ashore in port - you can leave your kids in Camp Ocean. For a fee, counselors will take care of your children while you have some kid-free time. Camp Ocean refers to this as Night Owls time and fees do apply, but this is a great option for childcare onboard. Ister-ships Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee also feature Bolt.

Staterooms aboard Carnival Celebration are more modern in appearance than the line’s ships of the past, with a palette of light blues and sea foam greens mixed with crisp white linens and furnishings. But Carnival’s new generation of ship, powered by cleaner-burning Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) technology, is also a ship of the future – and designers have thrown everything but the kitchen sink into its creation. Carnival claims that its packages don't allow FaceTime, iMessage or streaming from popular apps like Netflix and Hulu.

Find out if Carnival's newest ship is right for you with our honest Carnival Celebration cruise ship scorecard review. Carnival Pride is one of the oldest ships sailing for Carnival. That actually works in its favor if you're a retiree who enjoys smaller ships and vintage design — in this case, more artwork and decor by Farcus.

Another very popular, complimentary option is BlueIguana Cantina. This poolside venue has tacos and burritos available throughout the day, with breakfast offerings in the morning. And honestly, all of the food is pretty darn delicious - especially when you consider the affordability of the cruise fare in comparison to other cruise lines. Carnival Journeys is a limited series of sailings that focus on longer itineraries to impressive, worldwide destinations. You can book sailings to incredible ports in Japan, Philippines, Bali, Australia, New Zealand and Vietnam.

When I sailed, the first quarter, which is all about pool deck games for kids, was held on one sea day, and the other three were held on another sea day. Fully accessible rooms are stair-free, flat-threshold cabins, which offer wider (32-inch) doorways, turning space and bathrooms equipped with grab bars and shower seats. With calming seafoam green and yellow decor alongside extras like Elemis toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, these are some of the most relaxing cabins on any ship.

Complimentary dining includes Guy’s Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina while specialty dining venues include Cucina Del Capitano Italian and Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse. Walking around Carnival Spirit is like taking a trip around the world. Passengers will either love or hate the look, but eventually they get used to it.

Excellent added-fee options include steak, seafood and teppanyaki, which might be worth trying if you're celebrating a special occasion or feeling like a splurge. Unless you specifically request your cabin steward to come at night for turndown service instead of earlier in the day, your room will be made up in the morning. Hang the "SNOOZIN'" card on the outside of your door, and no one will bother you — but your room won't be cleaned that day. In terms of food and drinks, I had a strange experience at Chibang!
